Perceptual Computing

Digital storytelling with augmented reality: the book is just the beginning: “Digital storytelling provides an immersive experience, combining the power of your Intel® Core™ processor-based platform and the printed page. The augmented farm application demonstrates augmented reality through digital storytelling using the Intel® Perceptual Computing SDK.”


Adding multi-touch support to Unity games on Microsoft Windows* 7 and Windows* 8 desktop: “Currently, Unity does not process touch messages in applications running on Windows 7 and Windows 8 Desktop. We present a solution so developers can access the available multi-touch inputs in Unity applications running on Windows. The solution is implemented as a plug-in utilizing various Windows APIs to intercept the touch messages that are sent to the application. We process the information from these touch messages and then create a simple data set that can be accessed via C# from a script in the Unity application.”

Blast from my past: How meteors helped me understand touch sensors: “After getting my Star Trek on while reading about writing code for the sensors on the Intel® Ultrabook at, I was pleased to see that Adrian Atkison had submitted an article titled, “Meteor Madness.” The game is reminiscent of way too many hours I spent on an Atari* avoiding and destroying astrological objects that can be found just outside Mars in our solar system.”

Stunned by sensors: starting my Ultrabook training: “As an avid fan of all things Star Trek*, I can’t help but hear Mr. Spock’s voice when I read about all these sensors we have watching and helping us in our lives today. Unfortunately as a developer, I usually feel like the guy in the red shirt on the away party when Spock says, “Sir, sensors indicate we are clear to send Mr. Duncan into the cave”. The cave in which I am then killed by the monster that extracts all the salt from my body. The real nightmare is that I’m the guy responsible for the monster detection code.”

Code Samples

Outdoor light scattering sample released:  “This sample demonstrates how high-quality light scattering effects in large outdoor environments can be rendered on Intel HD graphics in real time. The technique extends the approach shown in the previously published sample and is based on the same key concepts.” – New mesh agent v167: “Two days ago I started updating the Windows x86 Mesh Agent with the latest v1.67 version. In this latest agent, the major change is the new use of the Windows Crypto API. In the past, I would use OpenSSL for everything across platforms. This new version stull uses OpenSSL, but on Windows I now make more use of Windows Crypto API to generate and store cryptographic keys.”


Enabling push notifications for Windows store apps using C#: “How does a developer write code to enable push notifications?  Well, this process requires some work, at least for the first time setup, which I’ll cover in detail.  In this blog, I will mainly focus on the setup required for push notifications.  For brevity, the server backend code for the final step of actually sending push notifications to client(s) is left out and is assumed to already exist.”


Highlights from Computex: “Computex is where many companies debut brand new hardware and form factors, and this year was no different. Plenty of new hardware was debuted at Computex 2013; space doesn’t allow for a total overview of everything that was displayed, but here are a few highlights.”
