Updated Guidance for Connected Apps on Windows 8(.1)

In our article on Delivering a Better User Experience for Windows* 8 Applications back in May 2013, we highlighted strategies for syncing and caching data from online sources to provide a more responsive user experience and basic functionality when a system is offline or connected to a slow network.  With the release of Windows 8.1, Microsoft is taking a more proactive approach to accomplish the same goals.

At BUILD 2013, Suhail Khalid and Matt Merry of Microsoft presented on new API’s and strategies that make the concepts we were advocating much simpler.  I urge you to watch Suhail and Matt’s presentation titled Building Great Service Connected Apps or read the relevant documentation on MSDN.  Taking advantage of these new API’s will make building responsive and connection aware applications a much more pleasant experience.
