This week, March 17-21, the world’s largest professionals-only game industry event will kick off in San Francisco, California at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California. The Game Developers Conference, or GDC, is an amazing event where game programmers, producers, game designers, executives, and many more all gather to talk about games and the future of the gaming and development industries.
GDC typically attracts a wide range of people, including programmers, artists, producers, game designers, audio professionals, business decision-makers and others involved in the development of interactive games. Over 23,000 people are expected to attend this year’s conference, with over 400 panels, tutorials, lectures, and presentations on game development topics. As in years past, the most recent and forward-thinking game development tools, platforms and services are slated to be featured at GDC 2014, along with the Independent Games Festival (for developers showcasing indie, original games) and the Game Developers Choice Awards(game industry peers give each other the recognition they deserve.
Here are some stats that the GDC conference organizers put together from last year’s conference:
- GDC conference attendees have an average of 6 years of experience, have worked on an average of 10 game titles, and published an average of 10 game titles.
- GDC attendees manage an average of 10 people directly or indirectly.
- 65% of GDC attendee are from North America with the balance mainly coming from Western Europe (10%) and Asia (6%)
- GDC 2013 conference attendees agree:
- They heard something useful within their craft that they didn't know before (82%)
- They were inspired (92%)
- They gained strong leads to advance their business (60%)
- The Expo Floor was one of the most important reasons to attend GDC (53%)
Intel at GDC
As in years past, Intel has a strong presence at GDC, and will be offering 16 kiosks for attendees to experience the latest in gaming platforms and devices, as well as PC games optimized for Ultrabook 2 in 1s, tablets, and Android. In addition, at Intel booth #1016, there will be product experts, tech sessions, and time to listen and interact with Intel researchers, engineers, and key industry partners.
RealSense™ technology will be on full display at GDC as well. You’ll be able to learn about this intriguing technology, find out more about the SDK, and how you can use it to make your apps more intuitive with gesture, speech recognition, face and head tracking, and much more.
A gaming conference wouldn’t be complete without a focus on graphics, and the Intel games and graphics development team will be presenting a new series of graphics samples that highlight Intel Iris and Iris Pro graphics functionality for Android and Windows. You’ll be able to get hands on with tablets and Ultrabooks to get a first-hand look at these new graphics functionalities. Want to get started? One of the best things about GDC is the chance to learn from other people, and this year you’ll be able to see student game projects from university game developer programs. You’ll get the chance to help decide which programs will receive one of two $10,000 hardware prizes from Intel. Prizes will be awarded for "Best Gameplay" and "Best Visual Quality”. In addition to all these great events, you’ll also be able to take advantage of live demos of the latest Android tool support, interact with a few of the winners from the 2013 Intel Level Up Game Developer Contest (and get information on this year’s challenge), and meet a few students in the Intel Student Makethon, a two-day development sprint with Intel Galileo Development boards.

SSX: Bringing a PS3 game to Android

This presentation looks at the challenges of porting SSX from the PS3 to Android. Beyond the obvious challenges of targeting a new OS and reworking the input system, we’ll share lessons about optimizing content for mobile platforms. This process involved moving from deferred to immediate rendering, porting shaders to GLSL, updating memory management, etc.
