The Intel® Software Innovator program has been very active for 2016 with growing support for developers in North America, Brazil, Europe, India, Asia Pacific, and China. The program supports innovative, independent developers who excel at creating and demonstrating forward-looking projects by providing them with the opportunity to speak and demo at industry events and developer gatherings. Intel Software Innovators use their expertise and innovation with cutting-edge technology to teach and inspire the greater developer community worldwide.
In 2016, 124 Intel Software Innovators actively participated in the program, training more than 134,000 people globally. Let’s take a moment to think about this. At events ranging from big multi-day conferences to hackathons to local meetups, innovators in this program chose to speak and demo their projects to other developers to inspire them to be more creative, to help them to learn about a new technology, to provide support to constantly evolving technologies and capabilities, and more. The program is really about working together, sharing information, and building a community of developers – and we saw that happen in 2016.
Today we want to recognize our Top Innovators of 2016. These are the Intel Software Innovators who went above and beyond and really went out of their way to promote community among developers. Each of these developers trained over 1000 people this year; a truly remarkable feat. Their dedication to the Intel Software Innovator program and their reach to the developer community is impressive. These 35 developers will be sent awards recognizing their achievements within the program and will stand as role models as the program continues into 2017. Please take a few minutes to get to know each of these extraordinary innovators.
An Intel Software Innovator and our first Intel® Black Belt Software Developer from India, Abhishek Nandy has been a strong Intel supporter for the past few years developing Intel® RealSense™ applications using Processing and Unity* to develop Android*-based games using Project Anarchy*. He has been using the Intel® XDK to create Android apps (Crosswalk* framework WebGL* integrated) and exploring the Intel® INDE IDE to build cross-platform apps.
Abhishek trained nearly 2,000 developers this year and is currently collaborating on projects with other innovators on several new projects, including developing a framework for Unity where you can control the game object called Unity VR/AR IoT Integration; Hover Bike, developed using Intel RealSense technology to use gestures to activate the game; creating a set of tutorials for IoT applications using the Intel® Edison board; and using Intel RealSense technology to track customer faces and emotions when shopping, called Emmometrics.
Narenda trained over 10,000 developers in Indonesia at a variety of events including giving a keynote speech at both the Bekraf Day 2016 in Yogyakarta and in Surabaya, ID Android Tech Talk in Bandung, Game Dev Gathering Indonesia, Intel Innovation Day Indonesia, Global Game Jam Indonesia, and more than 20 other events across the region. Narenda’s technical focus is on Android technologies with experience producing quality applications that have been downloaded over a million times globally.
An Intel Software Innovator and Intel Black Belt Software Developer, Aulia trained over 7,000 people in Indonesia at more than 25 events. Aulia is the founder of Dirakit, the biggest gathering of IoT developers, makers, and enthusiasts in Indonesia; a place where people can showcase, learn, and share how to make IoT projects. Aulia also used Intel RealSense technology to create Carpus, an augmented reality anatomy application for students to learn and understand more about the anatomy of the hand.
Ibnu Sina Wardy
Participating in a wide range of events throughout Indonesia and India, Ibnu has trained over 7.000 people on Android technologies. From small events and meetups with a couple dozen attendees to large events like Bekraf Developers Day with over a thousand attendees, Ibnu has done training on game development, application design, integration and monetization for Android.
Sidiq has trained over 5,700 developers in Indonesia on Android and IoT technologies. He participated in Bekraf Developer Day, ID Android Tech Talk in Bandung, Android Developer Academy, Global Game Jam Indonesia, and many more.
Adrianus Yoza Aprilio
Adrianus participated in several demonstrations at Bekraf Developers Day in Indonesia, as well as the ID Android Tech Talk in Bandung, Technology for a Better Life in Yogykarta, SMK Telkom Malang, and Developers from Zero to Hero. His technical focus area is mostly IoT with a bit of machine learning and Android technologies thrown in, and he’s trained over 5,600 developers.
Adam has presented his game, Virtual Stelarity, to over 4,200 developers in Indonesia through Bekraf Developer Day, Game Developer Bandung Ngariung, Game DevBDG3, and Startup Virtual Reality. Virtual Stelarity is a VR-based Android game about stargazing that uses a gyroscope to look at the stars and connect the dots to make a constellation.
With a focus on Android and IoT technologies, Rendra has attended Bekraf Developers Day, ID Android Tech Talks, IoT Universitas Pakuan Bogor, IoT Bina Sarana Informatika Bekasi, and Intel Android Meetups in Indonesia and trained over 4,000 developers.
Monalisa participated in Bekraf Developers Day in Indonesia, speaking to nearly 3,900 developers about Dirakit and IoT. Dirakit is the biggest gathering of IoT developers, makers, and enthusiasts in Indonesia allowing people to showcase, learn and share how to make IoT projects. Monalisa promotes Dirakit’s mission is to improve the world of IoT in Indonesia and to provide the best IoT solutions for the needs of the Indonesian market.
Sofian trained over 2,000 developers on IoT in Indonesia at events such as TechnoFair, Techno Corner, Kajian Komputasi, IoT Universitas Pukuan Bogor Developer Mengajar IT, CodeFest IoT Bigdata, BSI Stadium Generale, and IoT Seminar Palembang.
Suresh and George, Intel Software Innovators and Intel Black Belt Software Developers, work together in India with a focus on IoT, Intel RealSense technology, and machine learning to solve problems. Between the two of them they have worked with over 3,000 developers to showcase their projects. Their projects include Green Coding to make software that is more energy efficient, enabling Intel® Smart Connect Technology to keep your content continuously updated while your notebook is asleep, an Intel RealSense technology case study called HomeTheater, and also a case study on the design challenges facing designing applications for 2-in-1 devices that need to be optimized for both laptop and tablet modes.
Currently, Pablo has his Complete Virtual Reality Game Development Course on Kickstarter. This program is an online training to teach you how to become a professional virtual reality game developer. He has already surpassed his original goal and now has some stretch goals listed if you are interested in backing his project.
Frida has designed a virtual reality game, Tower Crane Simulator VR. It is a low cost and safe way to train people on how to operate a tower crane. Another project that Frida has created, Terkunci, is a virtual reality escape room themed puzzle game that lets you experience being trapped in a serial kidnapper’s house and you have to find the clues to escape. Frida has also designed a simple mobile arcade cabinet that you can build to setup your game to display at an event.
Sanuj has demoed his wearable device, Nurro, to nearly 1,200 people between his events in India and at IDF16 in San Francisco. His device was designed to help athletes who are focused on monitoring the stress levels of their muscles during and post training in order to improve the effectiveness of training, measure the muscles recovery rate, and prevent injuries.
Rupam often works in collaboration with other innovators on his projects in India and focuses on IoT devices. Rupam has demoed his projects featuring the Intel® Edison board and Intel XDK at a variety of hands on events to over 1,100 developers. Rupam has several projects on Developer Mesh, including Activity Based Temperature Control with Android and Intel® Edison, a Foot Gesture Based Text Entry System that supports people with upper body paralysis in communicating, Youdison which live streams video from Intel® Edison platform to YouTube, and an Ultrabook™ app that’s intuitive design and animation help kids to learn faster called Rainbow.
Pooja uses Internet of Things (IoT) technology to find simple solutions that will increase the quality of life for those around her. She has designed Kisani, an app that assists farmers in central India with optimizing their crops for the highest yields. The technology analyzes current resources, soil types and environmental conditions to alert farmers to the type of produce that would best thrive for them – even if not necessarily a traditional crop they are familiar with – and also uses sensors to alert when crops are properly hydrated to avoid wasting water.
Another project that Pooja was able to demonstrate frequently this year is called Baby Monitor. This is a wearable device designed for babies so that parents can monitor their health, temperature, environment and more 24/7. Pooja was also a speaker at Intel Celebrates Women’s International Day event in Bangalore where she discussed her journey to becoming a software innovator and she encouraged the audience to be a part of innovation as well.
Nathan demoed his Tanked! Arcade battle game to over 13,000 developers this year at esteemed events like the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2016), Augmented World Expo (AWE 2016), the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2016), the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC 2016), and the DevTech Mixer hosted by Intel at SxSW 2016.
Nathan along with fellow innovator, Alex Schuster, developed this game using a mixed reality gaming platform to create a mash between old and new game play. By using the Intel RealSense camera, Intel RealSense SDK, and Unity 3D game engine, they’ve developed a way to dynamically change the terrain in the sandbox. Konstantin reached over 8,000 developers through his demos at events such as the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2016) in Las Vegas, TechCrunch DISRUPT in New York, Game Developers Conference (GDC 2016) in San Francisco, and MixAR 2016 in Moscow.
Konstantin’s projects include Cappasity, a cloud-based 3D/VR platform designed for seamless integration of 3D content into e-commerce business processes including products digitizing and 3D/VR shopping visualization solutions. The Cappasity Easy 3D Booth is an affordable and easy-to-use full body 3D scanner for 3D printing and the Cappasity Easy 3D Scan lets merchandisers scan their products so that they can upload a 3D image allowing consumers to get a better picture of the items they cannot touch, and as a result, the online store increases sales and reduces the number of purchase returns.
From large events like the Southern California Linux* Expo (SCaLE14x Conference) and O’Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) to small events like Highway1 Speakership and e-Talent Endesa, Ron has influenced over 7,700 developers in California, Utah, Texas and Colorado.
Focusing on Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics, Ron is an open source software developer, businessperson, author, speaker, and an iconoclast. He created Cylon.js, Gobot, Artoo, and KidsRuby. He is also ringleader of The Hybrid Group. Check out this interview with Ron to learn what he thinks of robotics, open source, and why it’s important to play.
Paul is very involved in working with directly with other developers, he hosts regular meetup series throughout Connecticut teaching about IoT. He has also developed a warehouse scanner that he’s been demoing at shows that uses an Intel RealSense camera to scan an intake line to take inventory of new items. He’s also designed a platform that integrates multiple individual robots or devices to leverage machine learning in the cloud to make a Robotic Hive of smart bots. Paul really works on teaching and building technologies that help others to learn, one of those projects is his Classroom Internet of Things Portal, a turnkey IoT portal for educators to start using the Intel® Edison board and Grove* Starter Kit Plus in the classroom.
A fun project Paul has been working on that has gained a lot of attention is BB-8’s AWS Adventure. He uses Sphero’s BB-8 as a mapping and sensor robot that utilizing the Intel® Edison board as its gateway to AWS-IoT. Paul is also very involved with hackster.io a community dedicated to learning hardware.
Alex worked with Innovator, Nathan Greiner, in demoing their interactive, table-top game Tanked! to nearly 3,900 people at the SXSW Intel Dev Tech Mixer, the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2016), and Dreamhack. They were interviewed for an article on the Vice Motherboard site to talk about how the game works, challenges they’ve had, and their future. They are working towards creating developer kits for the Torch* Interpretive Projector System to allow other developers to create interactive tabletop and sandbox games as well.
David trained over 2,000 developers in IoT at events such as the NASA Space Apps Challenge, IDF 2016, HackMIT 2016, and the World Maker Faire in New York where he did a demo on the Intel® Joule™ module and Arduino 101*.
Chris is the co-founder and CTO of Octoblu, a revolutionary real-time IoT platform that was recently acquired by Citrix. Octoblu creates a global mesh network to connect systems, people and clouds allowing users to automate and control processes and analyze real-time events.
Chris was the keynote speaker at Asterisk User Conference & Expo (ASTRICON 2016) this year for the telecom industry. Chris was able to connect the Asterisk community to IoT by demonstrating that Asterisk could be used as the voice/telecom input/output of Octoblu. Chris also participated in the hackathon event at ASTRICON 2016 and his Dangerous Demo, connecting Asterisk to Google Speech to interact with phone calls, Octoblu, Blink1, and API.ai for natural language artificial intelligence interaction via telephone was the winning project.
Stephen and Stacy Wylie
Stephen and Stacy gave a demo to 1,000 developers at the University of Texas Dallas Engineering Week Expo where they used Grove* Kits, Robotics, and Intel® Edison board with its Bluetooth* capabilities to connect to an Android tablet and displayed how to interact with the device to adjust lighting, motion, and movement. They also integrated Scratch* and gave a hands-on demonstration of how changes in the code affected an LED string of lights and used a PIR sensor to alert of motions on the tablet.
Martin and Thomas, both Germany-based Intel Software Innovators and Intel Black Belt Software Developers, have demoed their projects to nearly 3,900 people this year. For their current project, they challenged themselves to use off-the-shelf hardware to create and out-of-body experience similar to what is in James Cameron’s 2009 movie Avatar. And they wanted to do it in just one day. The aptly named, Project Avatar, uses an NAO* Robot, Intel RealSense cameras, and a headset for the user. Using tactile sensors the robot is able to send touch events back to the human operator. They were able to resolve their biggest challenge, processing massive amounts of video data and transfer it over a wireless connection, by using an Intel® IoT Gateway and a special RouterBoard which gave the experience a decent out-of-body experience.
Based in Russia, Diana has participated in over 40 events throughout Russia and the Czech Republic this year training over 1,900 developers. Most of the training she conducts are in smaller groups like meetups with only a few dozen people. This allows her more face-to-face time with the developers that she works with.
An Intel Software Innovator and Intel Black Belt Software Developer, Marco trained 1,900 developers throughout Europe and the United States this year with a focus on IoT and Intel RealSense technology. Marco’s See4Me IoT project is a wearable device that uses an Intel Joule board equipped with Windows* 10 IoT Core is the brain of the device, an Intel RealSense camera is the eyes, and Microsoft Azure* Cognitive Services for the machine learning and AI to translate the environment through speech to the wearer.
Marco also has a small rover that can independently explore an environment or be remote controlled by WiFi* or from the cloud via a web app and an autonomous rover, Scanbot Rover. Scanbot Rover uses an Intel RealSense camera R200 to scan the environment and realize a digital map of it, storing the data locally; when an internet connection is available, the data is sent to Microsoft Azure* storage in order to use a machine learning back-end service to rebuild a full 3D representation of the environment.
Fabrizio has demoed his two projects throughout Italy to nearly 1,200 developers. Ultrasonic Sight is a mobile electronical device that Fabrizio has developed for visually impaired people. Many devices that are used to help visually impaired people have big holes in the technology and aren’t able to help people to understand holes or steps and can be susceptible to weather conditions. Fabrizio gets around these obstacles by using ultrasonic technology that can alert the user via beeps and vibrations of differences in ground level and possible barriers.
Reaction to Reaction (R2R) was designed as a way to give brands more information about their customer’s reactions when they browse storefront windows. Using Intel RealSense technology and a cloud based app for saving data, the platform can be trained to recognize facial expressions and give the shop valuable data about what the customers think of their products and displays.
Sergey’s focus is in IoT and he was able to train over 1,100 developers at various events in Russia including a variety of meetups, summer student schools, the NN Russia IT Fair, and an Intel Edison Webinar.
Lin, one of our Innovators in China, specializes in Intel RealSense technology and IoT. Lin demonstrated an Intel RealSense camera claw machine shop in China to over 7,000 people as well as several other Intel sponsored events throughout the region. In the past Lin has won awards and challenges for several games using Intel® Perceptual Computing SDK, Intel RealSense technology, and Unity* 3D, including Grand Prize Winner JOY of the Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge, second place in the Intel RealSense App Challenge with Draco X – Dimension Fighter, and has combined perceptual computing with a social-interactive game with Finding BBB.
Dahai has trained nearly 1,300 people on Intel RealSense technology in China at events including RealSense Talk and Training to students at Beijing City University, Booth Demos, Cocos Developer Salon, and Developer Meetups.
Qinshen trained over 1,000 developers in China on Intel RealSense technology, Android, and IoT technologies at events including Shanghai Maker Carnival, Innospace Demo Day in Shanghai, Cyzone Demo Campus, Chuangzhi Tech Afternoon Tea, and Innospace Salon.
With nearly 8,000 developers trained in Mexico this year, Arturo focuses on Android, game development, and Intel RealSense technology in his projects. Arturo works on very diverse projects, from Cleanbox, an automated kiosk for your laundry, to Away, an app that offers you all forms of transportation on a single platform, to Drop the Crab, a puzzle game that requires creativity and analytical thinking.
Arturo participated in the Software Guru Virtual Conference, HackMTY, and Mobile Day Mexico City as well as smaller Android events. As his Twitter profile states, he believes in making a difference, one app at a time.
As co-founder of VRMonkey, Pedro has demoed his projects to over 1,200 developers in South America highlighting his experience in IoT with Intel RealSense technology and Virtual Reality to create games. The Rabbit Hole is a virtual reality game mixing escape room elements with the theme of Alice in Wonderland. Demoed at IDF this year, 7VRWonders is an educational game designed to use virtual reality to teach people the history and archeology of the original 7 Wonders of the World. Using an Intel RealSense R200 Camera to create a virtual environment, Pedro has created the framework to create an interactive augmented reality game to shoot targets appearing all around you with his ARcade ARchers game.
With a goal to being people closer to the world of science and wanting to make learning fun, Pedro has designed Dinos do Brasil. This virtual tour takes a group of people on a 30-minute journey through time and space from the Brazilian prehistory to the Age of Dinosaurs, recreating geological, biological, and Brazilian historical-cultural aspects. This project will be permanently exhibited in Catavento Cultural Museum, the most visited museum in Brazil and the largest interactive museum of Latin America and will allow visitors to glimpse the dinosaurs that lived here in their daily activities in landscapes that have marked our territory hundreds of millions of years ago.
