AR/VR Tools and Tech Meetup, Austin - December 2017: Unity and Windows Mixed Reality

This month’s Meetup was hosted at Capital Factory on December 5th and the topic was Unity + Windows Mixed Reality. The meetup provided an entry-level overview of Mixed Reality and elaborated on the latest emerging technology and tools of the trade, including X Reality. Mixed Reality (MR), sometimes referred to as hybrid reality, is the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualizations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time, while X Reality (XR) describes technology-mediated experiences that combine digital and biological realities.

Finn Staber, of Chicken Waffle, began the event with a brief rundown of the hardware side of Virtual Reality (VR) history then went on to describe the variations of the Windows MR headsets including the Dell, Acer, Lenovo, and Samsung versions as well as a brief comparison of the variations. Looking into the specifications there are varying Fields of View (FoV), 110 degrees being the best from Dell and Samsung, followed by the Lenovo at 105 degrees and 95 degrees is the FoV for the others. All of these models have the highest display resolution, refresh rate, and display type aside from the Samsung Odyssey, which has an LCD display with a better resolution at 2880 x 1600.

This was a great segue into a talk by Microsoft's own Jason Fox, Senior Software Engineer, who spoke about the Dell MR Visors that use light-up controllers and outward-facing visor cameras to track motion, which were on site for demos after the presentations. Finally, Intel Innovator, Tim Porter defined the differences between VR/AR/MR/XR, shared how the various XR technologies can combine into a smoother product, requirements for setting up and developing XR, and a brief look at the future of volumetric capture. The slideshow is available by pdf.

This meetup hosted 30 developers and is a fantastic way to stay up-to-date on the VR scene and the progression of both software and hardware movement in Austin and the world at large as the community continues to expand its reach and expertise together.
