Intel’s Day Zero Google I/O Event: Developer Engagement, New Technologies and Fun with Android

Intel's Day Zero Google I/O Event intro imageGoogle’s 10th annual developer festival, Google I/O, was held May 8‒10, 2018, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. This premier event attracts thousands of software creators, strategists and innovators from around the world who come for inspirational talks, hands-on learning and the chance to learn about the latest Google developer products. For the world at large, "I/O" is the acronym for “input/output”; for the purposes of this conference, with its emphasis on open source development, I/O doubles as "Innovation in the Open."
Since Google doesn’t permit technology partners to participate inside the festival, Intel holds a stand-alone event, Intel’s Google I/O Day Zero demo and networking event, which takes place the day before the conference begins. This allows developers, who want to learn more about how Intel® architecture (IA) and Intel® software tools work within the Google ecosystem, the opportunity to attend presentations, see demos, meet experts, ask questions and get their hands on new technologies. 
Monday, May 7, was Intel’s sixth annual Google I/O Day Zero event. In keeping with the festival vibe of Google I/O, we again held our event at the Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company. Attendees got fun swag bags, enjoyed handcrafted beer and root beer, and dined al fresco on cuisine from top food trucks, while enjoying great live music.

Most of the attendees self-described as software developers, application developers, technical/engineers or IoT developers. Almost three-quarters rated their experience at our event as “very” or “extremely” valuable. Intel’s event manager Kellie Bayer said, “This was an amazing night with a great Google developer audience! Our demos resonated well with them, especially the ones related to AI, IoT and Android, and we hope we inspired them to try our tools and develop on Intel® architecture in the future.”
The Intel team used demos to show the strong collaborative relationship between Intel and Google that helps Intel drive software and hardware innovation on Google platforms. It offered a great way to showcase how Intel can help developers be successful with tools, libraries and frameworks such as the Intel® Computer Vision software development kit (Intel® CV SDK) and Google’s TensorFlow. And finally, the event demonstrated how Intel’s and Google’s embrace of open source technologies creates opportunities for community collaboration… and building scalable, reliable, user-friendly products.

Breakthrough technology demos

The event showcased 23 demos. Here’s a look at just a few of them:
  • Freshub: A smart home needs a smart kitchen. Transform a kitchen appliance into a voice-enabled shopping assistant running on Android Things*.
  • Stephen WylieGoogle Tilt Brush: Welcome to a world of pure imagination. Create, make, and share your own stunning world in VR with the combined power of Google Tilt Brush and the Intel® NUC 8 VR Machine. 
  • Wylie 1-flip, presented by Steven Wylie, an Intel® Software Innovator, showcases a miniature, fully functional, custom pinball machine running on the UpSquared board. 
  • Neural Computing on Android: See Android running on an Intel® NUC PC using Intel® Movidius neural computing APIs to train graphs. Note: Developers who came to the exhibit were surprised to see these capabilities on Android and expressed strong interest in using the technology in their solutions.
  • Clever Robot Labs—Mixed Reality Shootout: In this immersive mixed reality experience, users wear the new ARCore-powered open source HoloKit headset and use a 3DoF controller to fight futuristic soldiers. The demo was presented by Cyrus Lum, an Intel Software Innovator.
  • Building Devices within the Google Ecosystem: Code for performance across the entire spectrum of Google platforms—embedded, mobile, automotive, IoT, and even future iterations with Intel® Studio System.
Building devices white spaceOther demos featured at the event covered Chrome OS devices, digital signage, blockchain, smart cars, smart parking, smart surveillance, hyperparameter tuning, gaming performance optimization, adaptive learning and much more.
As for Google I/O itself: Again this year, there was a great deal of interest in Android Automotive technologies. Imad Sousou, corporate VP and GM of the Open Source Technology Center at Intel, put it this way: “We are committed to building Android as a turn-key automotive OS that helps automakers deliver the latest in-car infotainment for consumers.” 
This focus is paying off as the new collaborative works prove. For example, during the first day of the Google I/O event, Volvo Cars demonstrated the latest in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) experiences in a prototype Volvo* XC40—powered by an Intel® Atom® automotive system-on-chip (SoC).  Thanks to deep Intel-Google collaboration, Volvo buyers will get the advantage of voice recognition via Google* Assistant, gain the ability to use Google maps natively in the IVI, and have access to Android apps through the Google Play Store. It all boils down to this: The strong collaboration between Intel and Google makes it possible to innovate and improve on existing and future platforms. The benefit to developers is the ability to get to a market-ready product faster, remain competitive and engage more quickly in emerging markets, such as augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, internet of things and autonomous driving.
