Introducing Wireless Display Technology on IA Phones
As we know, many Intel Architecture (IA) phones were officially launched worldwide this year, including the LAVA phone in India, the Lenovo K800 in China, the Orange phone in Europe, and so on. We are proud that more and more people will use phones with Intel Inside®.


But what is the difference between ARM and IA phones?

IA phones have so many features, but we think the shining point has to be the Intel Wireless Display feature. It is said that Qualcomm and Marvell are also researching this new technology, but Intel is in the lead position. We believe that in the short term, the Wireless Display feature will be more and more popular as people find out what it can do for them.
1. What is wireless display technology?
Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) on the Medfield platform offers the capability of
streaming video, audio, and windowed text and graphics to a remote panel via a Wi-Fi* Direct (P2P) connection. The end-to-end framework from mobile host to a WiDi-enabled display panel is conceptually depicted in the figure below:


The left module is the smartphone (Medfield), and the right module is the WiDi adaptor. The IA phone connects to the WiDi adaptor through Wi-Fi direct protocol. Wi-Fi direct protocol allows Wi-Fi and WiDi to co-exist. Prior to this, the Medfield platform could only support WiDi and 3G. We hope to solve this bottleneck soon.

2. What is the WiDi adaptor?
Netgear(Push2TV2000) and D-link adaptors are recommended for WiDi on IA phones. End users can easily buy them on 360buy and Amazon.


A WiDi adaptor is a box that accepts a WiDi signal from an IA smartphone, decodes and changes the WiDi signal to HDMI signal, and pushes data to a TV through the HDMI port. It is easy to connect to the TV via the HDMI port.


It is said that some TV manufacturers are integrating WiDi adaptors into their units. Unless your TV has one, you just turn on the WiDi adaptor. The default Wireless Display application then searches the WiDi adaptor, similar to using Wi-Fi and BT. After entering an 8-digital pin code displayed on the TV, the phone will connect to the TV in Clone Mode.
The phone’s image will contain the adaptor’s firmware. Whenever the phone connects to the adaptor, it will compare the adapter’s firmware version with the latest one from the OEM. If the adaptor’s firmware is older, a popup will inform users to update-just click OK, the latest firmware will transfer from the phone to adaptor.

3. Compare Clone Mode and Extended Video Mode
Until now, wireless displays on IA phones supported 2 modes: Clone Mode and Extended Video Mode. When the phone connects to a TV, it will be default in Clone Mode. But if end users play video using Media Player Mode in Android, it will switch to Extended Video Mode automatically.
Clone Mode duplicates the phone display on the remote display. The resolution of the frames sent to the adapter matches the resolution of the local display. In this mode, both local and remote displays are turned on and show identical content. The frames being sent to the adapter are captured from the graphics engine.
Extended Video Mode is activated when the user plays video through Android’s Media Player application. In this mode, the original resolution of the video content is sent to the adapter.
While in this mode, the local display remains turned off and the video content appears on the remote display alone. The user is allowed to touch the local display to bring up the slider controls and control the playback. The frames being sent to the adapter are captured from the video decoder.
What is the difference between Clone Mode and Extended Video Mode? The resolution! The table below shows the resolution differences. In Extended Video Mode, the TV will show the original resolution of the video, but in Clone Mode, the TV can only show the resolution of the phone’s LCD.


4. Introducing the new mode-User buffer mode.
Until now, neither Clone Mode nor Extended Video Mode supported the split UI Function. We are developing a new User Buffer Mode for developers to realize split UI function. By using this mode, we believe that lots of amazing applications can be developed in the future.



Applications can use the User Buffer Mode to do WiDi streaming. The developer uses commands in the API to supply which frames to send to the adapter. This allows an application to show different content on the local and remote displays.
5. What can developers do by using the WiDi feature on IA phone?
WiDi is a new future on IA phones, making it easier for end users to expand their
LCD size. I think there is a good change that lots of ISVs will integrate the WiDi feature into their applications, especially games and video players. Intel’s WiDi is a great feature many users will come to enjoy.

Widi is "ok" I use it daily with my Lenovo laptop.
So intel phones will definitely have widi, great, but do phones already have this cabability? (galaxy S3, Sense 4 etc)
If so does it work well or at all?
Does the Medfield platform not dictate that this must be a non-exclusive format?
