Enabling Wireless Display (WiDi) on Windows 8 RTM

Hi everyone,

Windows 8 has just launched, so Intel just released the new WiDi software v3.5.40.0 to support Windows 8. Therefore, in order to enable WiDi officially on your Windows 8 device, follow the steps below:

1. Download the latest graphics driver for your Intel HD graphics from the following link. As of writing this message, the latest version is ( Choose x86 if you are running a 32-bit version of Windows 8, or x64 if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows 8: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily...

2. Download the latest Intel Wireless ProSet driver and software for Windows 8 from the following link. As of writing this message, the version is 15.5.6. Choose x86 if you are running a 32-bit version of Windows 8, or x64 if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows 8: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21999&lang=eng&wapkw=proset+15.5.6

3. Download the latest Intel WiDi Software v3.5.40.0 from the following link: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22016&ProdId=3227&lang=eng&OSVersion=Windows%208%2C%2064-bit*&DownloadType=Software%20Applications

4. After installing the WiDi software, run it and you should find your WiDi adapter. Connect to it, and it will show you a "Device Pairing" screen. Enter the 4-digit security code you see on your TV screen, and press continue.

5. The Windows "Add a device" screen will show up, asking you to "Choose a device or printer to add to this PC". Click on "IntelWiDiAdapter", and click Next.

6. A new Window will show asking you to "Enter the WPS PIN for your television". An 8-digit number may be already showing. Make sure the number is the same as the one you see on your television, and click Next.

7. The Intel WiDi software will take a bit of time the first time it connects to your WiDi adapter, and then will notify you that there is a firmware update. It will say that it wants to update your adapter to firmware v3.5.28.0. Click Update.

8. 7 files will be copied to your WiDi adapter, and your WiDi adapter will soon start updating itself and then restart.

9. After the adapter restarts after updating, and shows that it is ready to accept connections, connect to it again from the Intel WiDi software. The "Device Pairing" screen will show up again. Click continue.

10. The Windows "Add a device" screen will show up again, asking you to "Choose a device or printer to add to this PC". Click on the device that shows the name of your WiDi Adapter (if you haven’t changed this manually before, for NetGear WiDi adapters, this will probably be Living Room-PTV2000).

11. An 8-digit number will show on your television. Enter this number into the "Add a device" Window and click Next.

12. You will get connected to the WiDi adapter, and your computer's screen will be duplicated on the television, but the resolution might change and become lower. If this happens, right click on your desktop, and click on "screen resolution" and change your resolution to one that is appropriate for your television.

Attached in this blog is a video of me going through all these steps on my Ultrabook with an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 card.

By the way, if you still have other computers running windows 7 and an older version of the WiDi software, you will still be able to connect it to the WiDi adapter and enjoy WiDi, even though the adapter was just upgraded to firmware v3.5.28.0

Hope to hear back from you guys about your experiences.

Enjoy WiDi on Windows 8! :)

I just tried the procedure

I just tried the procedure highlighted in the original post by rradi for my new Sony Vaio Duo 11, reinstalling the already installed graphics an wireless drivers, and all worked perfectly!

the links to the 3 installers (graphics, wifi, and widi) in the original block are still working, though they understandably now point to newer versions.

I thought that it wouldn't work based on some of the comments I saw here, but I had no issues at all.

@Michael F.: I have the same problem, with the original drivers from ASUS I can not install Wi-Di on my notebook N56VZ. I tried to install the drivers directly from Intel, but none of them can be installed. How did you do it?

actually I conducted some more investigation and other attemps.
I got rid of display, wifi and widi drivers released by ASUS and installed the latest drivers provided directly by INTEL in order Wi-Fi PROset SW, graphics driver and Wi-Di SW and at the end it works now.
Apparently also some troubles with unforced disconnections is solved as well.
Best regards, FruhMi

Hello, rradi & others,

Hello, rradi & others,
really good blog, thanks for many advises provided here!
Unfortunatelly it does not work for me :-(

- I have upgraded my ASUS Zenbook (UX31A) OS from Win7 to Win8Pro (x64),
- downloaded all latest drivers from Asus support website
--HD Graphics 4000 v15.28.864.2875,
--Wireless PROset v15.5.648,
--WiDi SW v3.5.40.0,
- installed them following Intel suggestion,
- hard reset my Belkin F7D4501,
- disabled Windows firewall.

However can see my Belkin adapter in WiDi, when I try to connect, the application disconnects PC from WiFi router and after few seconds I receive message "Unable to connect...restart adapter or computer."

Even when I try manually "add device" via Windows Control panel I cannot see the Belkin ScreenCast adapter.

Before whilst using Windows 7, there were not troubles with it.

Looking forward any idea which could help.
Update (still in Win8Pro):
-> After installation of older drivers (Widi 3.1.29; PROset 15.3.1) I updated Belkin ScreenCast firmware from to
-> then upgrade of Widi to 3.5.40, after connection I was offered another firmware upgrade to, nevertheless uprgade was finished succesfully on the next connection it was offered again.
-> now I installed the older drivers, I can connect, anyway the connection is lost approximatelly in 30-60s.

recently came across this

recently came across this thread and wanted to share that fo me WiDi on Windows 8 (UB and on Fujitsu Q702) worked with the following drivers combination

Name [00000014] Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6235
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\netwsw00.sys (, 10,97 MB (11.499.008 bytes), 03.06.2012 09:33)

Name Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\igdkmd64.sys (, 5,10 MB (5.343.584 bytes), 28.09.2012 12:51)

The latest version of the WiDi software v3.5.40.0.

I am using a belkin WiDi receiver running firmware.
@Imran B. can you please attach your msinfo32.exe output?

I am getting some time

I am getting some time "Connection Failed" error and some time I see "Unable to obtain network address" on my TV.
I reset the adapter but still the same problem.
I removed and re-installed Intel WiDi App and Intel PRO Wireless but same problem.
I checked my firewall settings. WiDi App was there. Wireless PAN DHCP server was not there. I added manually and given permission on both private and public network. Still same problem.
I am using Windows 8 64 bit on Acer Aspire X timeline 3830TG laptop. (Got no problem with driver installation.)
Could some one help?

Using a Asus Vivobook s400

Using a Asus Vivobook s400 Win8 64 Bit, Downloaded all files necessary, follow the format as below.
1 - Wireless (WiFi) Driver, wireless_15.5.6_e64 [After installation, error- Adapter not found]
2 - Graphics Driver, win64_15288 [Didn't work the suggested way, used 7zip to unzip the file, installed drivers manually and program manually]
3 - Wireless Display Software, Setup [Didn't work at all, unzipped with 7zip, 283 MB filled unzipped to a 84kb documents, seems like this file is corrupted]

I tried to do that all different ways, tried compatibility on XP SP3, Win 7 all 64 bit.. even 32 bit.. none of the way worked.. I feel like the WiDi file is corrupt.
