Problem with Intel G43 on linux

Problem with Intel G43 on linux

I already tried to get support for this problem somewhere else, but I didn't get any help: may be this is the correct place...

My specs:
CPU: intel core2duo with 4 Gb of RAM
MB: asus p5ql-em
VGA: intel g43 (integrated on the MB)
Monitor: asus vw198s
OS: Ubuntu linux 8.10 x86_64

I have two problems:

1)
The correct resolution of the monitor (1680x1050) is not recognized out of the box: after installation, it ran
at a lower resolution (1360x768) and I was not able to change it.
I couldn't find on the net a valid modeline for my monitor.
I then followed the instructions on
http://www.x.org/wiki/FAQVideoModes#head-82230a582646cbf28ac41dec2139732...
to obtain a valid modeline using powerstrip.
I got the following

Modeline "1680x1050" 147.600 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -hsync +vsync

which seems to work: is the correct one?

2) (and more important problem)
Sometime (quite often but not everytime) when I logout
to change user instead of the usual gdm greeting I get that the monitor
has no signal and goes automatically in poweroff: I then have no way to use the computer (not even a remote login) and
the only thing that I can do is an hard reboot of the pc.
This is VERY annoying.

Can anybody help me?

Thank you a lot.

Fabio

PS: if necessary I can post the Xorg.0.log or wathever else.

1)Well, if it works, then by definition it's probably the right one. :)

2) Have you posted to the Xorg mailing list yet?

Yes, I did:

I got a couple of replies, asking for the log file: I posted it, but the discussion died.
I don't know what else I should do; what I know is that the freezing is really annoying.
The biggest problem in describing it is that it is not deterministic: it happens sometime, but not always, and I am not able to relate it to anything.

I have the same problem with X crashing on login, user switch, or log out. It happens randomly but frequenty. I might have to switch to vesa until the g43 driver is fixed.

sounds like the os cant use the modified settings after you log off
must be the video card drivers are not actually used when you are logged off otherwise you wouldnt have this problem since you dont see this problem while logged in

Is there any chance that this problem will be fixed with the passage to GEM (which, if I am not wrong, will happen in Ubuntu 9.04) or it is better if I switch to a Nvidia/Ati vga?
