Running Analysis

To run the analysis from the Microsoft Visual Studio* IDE:

  1. Choose your target.

  2. Build your target in the Release mode in the development environment of your choice.

    Note

Make sure you configured the Microsoft* Symbol Server to download symbols for the system libraries and enabled generating debug information for your own libraries.

  3. Click the New Analysis button on the Intel® VTune™ Amplifier toolbar to choose and configure an analysis type in the Analysis Type configuration window.

  4. In the Analysis Type window, click the Start button on the right command bar to run the analysis.

To pause the analysis at the application start and then manually resume it when required, click the Start Paused button on the right command bar.

Outcome: For targets compiled from Visual Studio software, the data collection result (*.amplxe files) shows up in the Solution Explorer under the My Amplifier Results folder, in the alphabetical order. For executable files imported to the Visual Studio project, the data result node appears at the solution level. Double-click a result to open the collected data in a default viewpoint.

Tip

You can provide a meaningful name for the result (for example, application name) for better identification. To do this, select the result, right-click and choose Rename. The file extension *.amplxe cannot be changed.

To run the analysis from the standalone interface:

Prerequisites:

  • Configure the Microsoft* Symbol Server to download symbols for the system libraries and enable generating debug information for your own libraries.

  • Build your target in the Release mode.

  1. Create/open a VTune Amplifier project.

  2. Click the New Analysis button on the Intel® VTune™ Amplifier toolbar to choose and configure an analysis type in the Analysis Type configuration window.

  3. In the Analysis Type window, click the Project Properties button on the right command bar to choose and configure your analysis target.

The Project Properties dialog box opens. You can also open this dialog box by clicking the Project Properties button from the VTune Amplifier toolbar.

  4. In the Target tab of the Project Properties dialog box, specify and configure your analysis target.

  5. Click OK to close the Project Properties dialog box.

  6. In the Analysis Type window, click the Start button on the right command bar to run the analysis.

To pause the analysis at the application start and then manually resume it when required, click the Start Paused button on the right command bar.

Note

The Start button may be disabled if you either did not specify the analysis target or selected the analysis type that is not supported by your processor.

Outcome: VTune Amplifier analyzes the target, finalizes the result, and opens the collected data in a default viewpoint.

Note

To change the result name template or the default directory for result location, go to Tools > Options (or Options... in the standalone interface menu) and select Intel VTune Amplifier <version> > Result Location from the left pane of the Options dialog box.
