Platform Setup

This section of the guide covers platform assembly and electromechanical connections required to perform basic tasks.

The following items are noted as required, or highly recommended, to have on-hand before beginning to assemble the development platform.

A female-to-male USB ethernet adapter and ethernet cable

 

Optional method to connect the development platform to a network using a wired connection. An adapter with an RTL8xxx chipset is recommended.  

Passive heatsink

Optional - required for workloads over 2 Watts Advanced Thermal Solutions* under part number ATS1166-ND Included in the Intel® Joule™ developer kit

Cooling fan for passive heatsink

Optional - requires mounting method Sunon* fan, Model# MC30100V2-000U-A99  

Cooling fan mounting block (for passive heatsink)

Optional - provides a method to secure fan to expansion board 3D printable fan mounting block for reference fan Design provided under a Creative Commons license

Active cooling solution

Required for Imaging (MIPI CSI & Intel RealSense) use cases.

Multiple vendors have created solutions based on the Intel reference design. Always validate proper fit and attachment for your intended use case

USB Input Devices (HID Keyboard and Mouse)

Optional - highly recommended   Expansion board has a single Type A port; see USB HUB item below

USB HUB

Optional - a powered HUB is highly recommended   Use a powered USB hub to connect multiple devices to the expansion board

HDMI cable between expansion board and a display device

Optional for headless configurations, required if using a display device   Expansion board uses a MicroHDMI connector.

Bluetooth HID devices

Optional - not recommended as primary input devices as services are not enabled at BIOS menu level.  

Recommend to use only after device configuration is stabilized as product specific drivers may not be available during BIOS menus and within recovery modes

A Wi-Fi* network and internet connectivity

Recommended for file downloading  

Recommend 2GHz or 5GHz A/B/N with open security for initial setup

USB Mass Storage device

Optional - USB3 devices are recommended, USB 2 is supported  

Platform can be configured to boot to a live OS image on USB storage

SDCard and adapter for use with a workstation

Optional - minimum of 16GB  

Platform can be configured to boot to a live OS image on SD Card

Replacement antennas

Workstation for development and debug

Required - to install BIOS and make OS install images on USB storage
 
Optional - a workstation will enable serial console communications with the developer kit and a way to push files, tools and package to the platform
Ubuntu* 16.04 LTS recommended.

Terminal emulator application for workstation

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Protection

Warning:
Observe proper Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) best practices to protect the module, development kit, and accessories. Best practices include keeping devices contained in protective bags and utilizing a grounded wrist strap when handling devices.
