Storage

The Intel® Joule™ platform offers multiple solutions for data retention: eMMC, SD Card, and SDIO. Each storage type is intended for a specific use but offers the developer the flexibility to choose between them.

eMMC*

The module contains an embedded MultiMedia Card (eMMC) with ether 8GB or 16GB of storage capacity. See the System on Module Overview for module configurations.

A 5.1 controller handles eMMC* Protocol at transmission, packing data, adding cyclic redundancy check (CRC), start/end bit, and checking for transaction format correctness.

SD Card 3.0

Out of the box,the Intel® Joule™ developer kit has a removable 16 GB Micro SD Card v3.01 whose primary function is a removable storage device.  It uses an Arasan SD3 controller that handles SD Protocol at transmission, packing data, adding cyclic redundancy check (CRC), start/end bit, and checking for transaction format correctness.  This controller can also support SDIO (Wi-Fi + BT) devices instead of an SD (storage) card.

To format your card, locate the home for your SD card connector by the command:

$ df

It should produce something similar to:

Filesystem  1K-blocks   Used  Available   Use%  Mounted on
/dev/sda3   208175553 778345  207397208     0%  /

Identify the path to your SD card. Use the mkdosfs command to format the card:

sudo mkdosfs –F 32 –v /path/to/sd/card

where:

                -F flag is for the Fat32 file system

                -v flag is for verbose

SDIO

The SDIO is intended to provide storage for an external Wi-Fi* device.  It uses an SDIO 3.0 controller that handles SDIO Protocol at transmission, packing data, adding redundancy check (CRC), start/end bit, and checking for transaction format correctness.
