The Intel® Joule™ compute module integrates a powerful four-core, 64-bit Intel® Atom™ SoC, high definition graphics, and wireless communications into a compact System on Module (SoM) form factor.
The module generates thermal energy (heat) relative to CPU and graphics workloads. The goal of thermal management is to control this energy and maintain a balance between performance and the capacity of the system to effectively dissipate heat.
Designing an effective thermal management solution begins by determining the power requirements of the system’s worst-case workload under real-world conditions. Once the power requirements for the workload have been established, a passive and/or active heat dissipation solution can be designed that will allow a system to operate with maximum performance. In the event that a system is operated outside of the parameters of the original design, the module includes firmware controls that will ensure the module continues to operate within a safe temperature range.
