Research at Intel 2012

For over 2 decades, researchers at Intel's R&D Labs have been producing groundbreaking technologies that enrich everyday life and reinvent the ways that people experience computing. In 2001, Intel founded the organization that is today known as Intel Labs and in 2003 it hosted the first Research at Intel event to showcase the diversity of ongoing research projects from around the globe. On June 26th 2012, Research at Intel marked its 10th anniversary. The event highlighted 20 research projects demonstrating the latest in technology innovation from researchers at Intel Corporation and external collaborators. Research projects in "My Life", "My Job", "My Car" and "Tech Essentials" were presented.

In case you missed it, Intel launched a new research center as well. The Intel Science and Technology Center for Social Computing will develop and apply social science tools to critique, democratize, and inspire new technologies, paradigms, and ways of living. Where do "you" begin and your online identity end? Search engines, social networks, and other services already track your online behavior, and increasingly - through mobile and embedded technology - your everyday behavior as well. Conversely, your behavior and even self-identity is increasingly shaped by what these online services direct your attention to, by applying - behind the scenes - algorithms to your and other's movements, preferences, and habits. In ways like these, our lives are becoming entangled with computational systems, and vice versa. What are the personal, cultural, and technological implications of computing that is so thoroughly social?

Here are the four Facets of Life showcased at Research@Intel this year:

My Life

This facet looks at the technologies Intel Labs researchers are investigating for future interactions between people and the technologies in their lives. We will explore new and easier ways to shop, from trying on clothes with an avatar, or even help you navigate through a mall to find the store you are looking for. We are also exploring new experiences in the home, such as being able to project movies on any surface, being able to live without keys, or have control over the energy consumption of the devices in your home.

This technology will give you the ability to transform everything and anything into an interactive display device.

My Job

In this facet we show research to help businesses benefit from the advancing innovation economy. At the office, productivity will be enhanced by digital assistants, such as technologies that automatically transcribe and translate what people are saying in meetings to promote better communication and institutional memory. Office buildings will be greener and less costly by more intelligently managing IT, heating & cooling. For the back office, we are investigating data visualization tools to allow companies to understand and apply complex information, such as analyzing sensor data to optimize the energy utilization of a factory production line. In addition, we look to help cloud services flourish by better ensuring the safety of both personal and corporate data.

My Car

Imagine a personal assistant and it’s your car. It’s knows you, your schedule, driving routines, emotions, and the more time you spend with it, the more it learns about you. We begin with researching people and their behaviors with their car, we integrate sensors to collect data, develop prototypes and simulate real-world scenarios, and stride for a sustainable and low-carbon design. Intel Labs is working with industry leaders to help influence and drive the vehicle of tomorrow.

3D Web

Real-time, Content-aware Video for All your Devices
Video content over wireless networks is exploding, creating both technical and business challenges for wireless carriers looking to enable new services on their networks. We are investigating several innovations that have the potential of both increasing wireless network capacity as well as delivering an improved experience for people streaming video. These technologies would serve multiple streams of video that are tailored specifically for the type of device people are using (for example video streamed to laptops would be encoded at higher bit rates, and video streamed to a smart phone would be encoded at a lower bit rate)

The demo presents a hardware mechanism for mobile multicore systems that uses user’s requirements such as performance, power and reliability as inputs and redistributes resources accordingly among applications for improved user experience.
