A play that games itself


I'm Kyle Weicht and I'm here on the internet with my colleague Omar Rodriguez, and we want to share a sample we created: Colony, a highly parallel, optimized crowd simulation with tens of thousands of units simulated using a novel ray-casting technique. One of the goals we had with Colony was to take the common concept in real-time strategy games of having thousands of intelligent units on screen and demonstrate how to increase that number in a scalable way. This was achieved with various optimizations including instruction and thread level parallelism. We’re releasing all the source code and art assets so you can hit the ground running.
