App Innovation Showcase at IDF 2014: What to Look Forward To

In less than a month, developers, makers, and creators from all over the world will be getting ready to come to San Francisco for the 2014 Intel Developer Forum (IDF14).  This year’s event focuses on the developers and the amazing creations, culture, and capabilities that they bring to the table. From a keynote that focuses on advancements with Intel technologies to (new this year!) Mega Sessions to a plethora of exhibitions, IDF 2014 is going to be great.  We’re also very excited to share with you hands-on demos in the App Innovation Showcase that will be focusing on Android*, Intel RealSense, and Windows* demos with the latest in Intel technology.

Gregor Biswanger:Dev Story /*HACK THE CODE*/

Gregor Biswanger, Intel Black Belt Software Developer, will be bringing us Dev Story /*HACK THE CODE*/, a project led by the developer community focusing on the Intel® XDK. This full-fledged application is all about having fun with the app and succeeding in the mini-challenges that were inspired by different pillars of the development lifecycle. IDF attendees are invited to play the app and then head over to Github to grab the code and start building their own levels and challenges.  

Tim Corey: My Health Assistant

Tim Corey has been developing software professionally for the past 16 years. In that time, he has been a consultant, a college professor, an IT director and a team leader. He is currently the lead technical consultant at Epicross, a small consulting company focused on customer efficiency and return on investment. Tim is a Microsoft Certified Professional and a certified project manager (PMP). In his spare time, Tim enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

This app was built as an entry in the 2013 Intel® App Innovation Contest hosted by CodeProject in partnership with the Intel® Developer Zone; the app went on to win in the Health Category.  This innovative app locates the nearest medical services when you are on the go, reminds you when to take your medication, and tracks and reports on your medical history.

  • Touch - The application has been designed to be touched, not just clicked on.
  • GPS - Used to find the nearest pharmacy (or hospital, doctor, etc.)
  • WiFi - Used to access the medical APIs as well as to back up the data on Dropbox.
  • Portability - Used to take medical information to the doctor easily as well as to be there when life events happen.

 

Gregory Menvielle: Localize, internationalize your app - XDK

Gregory is a French-American entrepreneur and founder of the software application smartnotify.us. Gregory has a background in Information Systems, international expansion, helping companies achieve success on a global scale as part of his  Consulting practice Pyramedium inc.  Gregory is also part of the Non-profit Costs of Care, where he oversees technologies initiatives that help caregivers decrease healthcare costs.He holds a BA in Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles and an MA in Egyptology from the University of Chicago, neither of them preparing him to keep up with his 4 year old daughter! He regularly writes for different groups.  His personal blog and link to articles can be found at:https://www.smartnotify.us/mainsite/inside.aspx?i=b&uid=489.

 

Apps need to work in the global economy, yet few are prepared and coded to do so from day one. Date formats, language files, currency preferences, and time zones, getting all these little details right can set an app above the rest and make it soar.

Gregory Menvielle will share tips on internationalizing your apps to grow adoption, tricks on success in going international, and how to communicate effectively with international users.

 

Justin Link/Chronosapien Interactive: Space Between

Justin Link is a media developer and owner of Chronosapien Interactive from Orlando, Florida. He has been developing emerging media applications for five years and has a passion for technology and science. In his free time, he loves playing music and video games and uses those to drive the next generation applications he creates.

Space Between is a 2D puzzle game based on voice commands and gesture sets found within Intel's Perceptual Computing SDK in which a player communicates with, guides, and teaches a creature in an abstract virtual world. The hybrid of voice, gesture, and traditional input modalities as well as the unique mechanic of two way communication between the player and creature creates a unique experience that both highlights the functionality of Intel's Perceptual Computing SDK and gives players an experience not currently found in games today. Space Between was a winner in the Intel® Perceptual Computing Showcase in 2013.

 

Jon Collins and Troy Parker/Code-Monkeys: Stargate SG1 Gunship and RedWall

Troy Parker is a developer and self-styled “man who does everything no one else wants to do” at Code-Monkeys. Current projects include RedWall, Threat Dynamics, Stargate SG1 Gunship, with fan favorites likes Wind Up Football and Bok Choy Boy 2 also under his belt.

Jon Collins is a senior technical consultant working alongside Code-Monkeys of Newberg, Oregon on a number of cutting edge Intel-driven projects.  With 20+ years’ experience covering fields from infrastructure app development to game development and social connectivity, he provides the technical and process expertise needed to leverage new technologies into existing platforms.  With an emphasis on developing and publishing using the Unity3d toolset since the early days of its availability, Jon is always looking to new ways of using the tools at his disposal.

This demo will showcase totally controller-free RealSense controls, two handed commands for aiming and camera plus fire and zoom, and great interactive gameplay featuring Stargate Gunship and the RedWall universe.

Hans Kratz/AppFour: AIDE

Hans Kratz is the co-founder of appfour, the creator of development tools and learning apps running on Android. He likes solving the hard problems arising from making cool stuff work on resource-constrained devices.As a serial entrepeneur he has cultivated the startup spirit since graduating from university. In his spare time he loves to got yacht racing.

The mobile shift influences all areas of computing. It has started with content consumption and is now continuing to e-learning and productivity applications. Why should a software developer be able to write emails on his phone but not work on his app?

AIDE is our on-device Android* IDE for Intel and ARM devices. It has full support for Java and C/C++ development using the Android NDK. It can be used for developing and testing apps or games directly on the device. Native APIs like OpenGL ES are supported for native development. AIDE is the only full-featured IDE for mobile devices across all mobile platforms. It is being downloaded over a million times per year.

We will demonstrate our hands-on course which allows beginners to learn Game development using libGDX. We will show off how the user can continue to improve the game in AIDE on his own and how he can switch seamlessly between developing on the mobile device and a PC.

 

Matt Pilz/ LinkedPIXEL: Scribblify and Magic Doodle Pad

Born and raised in small-town Wisconsin, Matt Pilz has been intrigued by computers and technology since the age of 7 when his older brother gifted him a Commodore 64. With a natural drive to create and innovate, it wasn't long before Pilz began programming his own games and applications--a passion that has stayed with him ever since.  As founder of linkedPIXEL LLC, Pilz currently enjoys developing apps for a diverse range of platforms including desktop, mobile, smart TVs, Web and other specialized devices. Over the past couple of years, Pilz has produced a series of award-winning apps for new and rising Intel-based technologies.

Scribblify:  Drawing app with 10-point touch capability and Google Chrome*-based GUI took the grand prize in the Intel® App Innovation Contest 2013 using resources from the Intel® Developer Zone.

Magic Doodle Pad: drawing app that’s controlled with hand gestures; winner in the 2013 Intel® Perceptual Computing Challenge.

Both apps will showcase rich functionality made possible by Intel’s All-in-One hardware including 10-point multitouch and a 1080 HD full screen paintable canvas and interface.

Intuitive perceptual features powered by Intel’s RealSense technology allow entire app to be controlled using hand and finger tracking, voice control and gesture detection.

Jacob Pennock/Livid Interactive: Head of the Order

First Place winner in the 2013 Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge, Head of the Order is a gestural spell casting game. Players face off tournament style and use gestures to create magic spells which they can cast at each other or defend themselves with.

To cast a spell, the player will raise a single finger, and draw a stroke based gesture which corresponds to a particular spell. Beyond single stroke based gestures, the game features a deep level of gestural interaction. Highlights the possible depth of gestural interaction and its effect on emerging gameplay mechanics, as well as provide as much enjoyment for the player as possible.

Eskil Steenberg/Quel Solaar: WebGL music video created from PerC captured data

Eskil Steenberg runs Quel Solaar as an independent development and research studio, working on games, creative tools, and technologies. While perhaps most known for the procedural action adventure game "Love", Quel Solaar has also produced a range of creative tool for everything from 3D modeling, to asset management and texturing. The studio has a strong commitment to open source and shares much of the developed libraries and technologies under a Free BSD license.

For this project we have created a virtual 3D experience traveling inside the mind of a musician through the stages of his life. The final delivery was a WebGL website where users could interact with the experience and 5 arcade machines where special invited guests could experience the content using an Oculus Rift head-mounted display.  All content for the experience was either created procedurally or captured using the Intel Perceptual computing camera.
