Installation Failure Issues

Installation Failure Issues

Hi,

Sorry if this isn't an appropriate place to ask this, but I couldn't find anything in the knowledge base, support FAQs, etc.

Having downloaded Parallel Studio (Evaluation), I attempted to install, and everything was fine until I recieved this message:

Microsoft Visual Studio* 2008 software is not installed on this system.
Installation will end because this product must integrate with Microsoft Visual Studio* software.

This surprised me, because it is, quite definately. Been using it for some time.
(I de-selected the Parallel Studio Install option to have integration with 2005 as well.)

However, upon further inspection, I have an option in my start menu, to start VS8 with Parallel Studio .. and it does start up.

So - are there likely to be any negative side effects from this installation error?
Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard,
Yes, I've not seen this issue also but I don't seethink there should be anynegative side effects from this error. Nevertheless, let me touch base with our installtion folks, will confirm on why this message. Also, can you provide few more details:
1. I am assuming you have VS2008 installed and integrated Studio with it during installation, correct?
2. I am also assuming you've downloaded the latest Studio (Initial Release) version?

-thanks,
Kittur

Thanks.

I do have VS2008 installed, and left the default ticked integrate with VS2008 (I unchecked the option to integrate with VS2005, which I also have installed.)
I downloaded the current version, today. Compiler build numbers: Intel C++ Compiler 11.1.061 [IA-32]

I re-ran the install, and selectedthe repair option - it didn't indicate that anything had changed.

I am experiencing some issues with compilation though (catastrophic error: unable to obtain mapped memory (see pch_diag.txt)) which may or may not be related.
I have posted on another thread regarding this error.

Thanks,

Richard

Thanks Richard, will get back to you as soon as I get some update on this from our installation folks, appreciate much.
-regards.

Richard,
do you have VS2008 express? we do not support it. It's strange that the installation went on after you de-select the integration.
could you remember each dlg you've seen? Only the first 4 or 5.

Thanks,
Jennifer

Also Richard, our install folks wanted you to give them the VS version info: "Open VS, go to help, click on About Microsoft Visual Studio and send us the information about what kind of VS 2008 is installed on his system"

Could you also attach the install log files: %TEMP%parallel_studio_install.log
%TEMP%parallel_studio_install.log_issa

-thanks much
Kittur

I would say that this is the right place to post, and I have to add my voice as well -- installation is borked, please fix and republish:

I want to evaluate the product and provide feedback, but I really don't have enough free time to troubleshoot installation issues. I am using Visual Studio 2008 Professional on Windows 7 RC x64 if that is of any help.

Moreover, when the installation process fails like this, it is completely unacceptable to leave the system in half-installed state - at least it could perform a rollback to undo any changes made to the registry, filesystem and environment variables.

EDIT: Solved the problem.

TMP environment variable had an extra space (i.e. "C:TEMP " instead of "C:TEMP"). That caused the both the setup and the log file issue. It would be nice if in the future setup does not assume that the TMP path exists -- it should check if it is valid, and give an appropriate error message.

Finally, I had to perform uninstall twice to fully remove the product before I managed to reinstall it correctly. Weird.

Igor Levicki

Hi Igor,

Just a note: Intel Parallel Studio does not support Windows 7 (please, see the release notes document for supported OS list). It doesn't nesessaraly mean that it shouldn't work there, but we do not guarantee normal functioning with unsupported operational systems. Please, use supported OS for Parallel Studio evaluation.

I believe setup utility relies on TEMP environment variable, not existing absolute path. So, if the environment variable was broken, it could cause the problems.

Thanks Igor to find out the root cause & work-around. I'll report it to the installation team.

The "c:temp " issue is fixed in the Intel Parallel Studio SP1.

Thanks,
