In conjunction with the Chesapeake Conservancy and the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), Old Dominion University’s Mitigation & Adaptation Research Institute (MARI) hosted a Code for Good hackathon under the White House’s Climate Data initiative. The project here was to design a system of low-cost water level sensors, aggregate the data to evaluate weather conditions, and provide useful services to the community.
Intel is inside more and more Android devices, which is why they teamed up with experts and non-profits in the Android Development community to not only help developers everywhere with free tools and resources, but also to donate to non-profits that have furthered the Android development community through education and technical programs. What are these programs you may ask? One of the programs is the Android Developer Field Guide spearheaded by developers Paul Blundell, Jason Mark, Shen Ye, and Mark Murphy.
The Intel® Code for Good Math Game Event was a rather ambitious undertaking for two reasons. First, the topic of math and figuring out a strategy to make it fun and educational is a tough mission in and of itself. Secondly, the hackathon was a coordinated event involving interns and volunteers at three different Intel® sites over the weekend of July 19 and 20, 2014.

What do I get out of this?
You'll gain experience teaching, public speaking, and managing multiple teams and projects. You'll hone your skills with the technologies being used. Also, the events are fun! You'll impact students’ lives in a positive way and if your hackathon is part of the Code for Good initiative, you'll be helping society at large.
These events can show non-coders new potential, teach effective software development practices, help students acquire specific technology and interpersonal skills, and bridge the gap between academia and the real world. In school, you learn and then apply; in the real world, you have to apply without learning. These events help participants “learn how to learn,” learning through application.
