Start with Hotspots - Intel® VTune™ Amplifier XE

In this video, we describe what Intel® VTune™ Amplifier XE can do. Then we demonstrate how to use the tool to find basic hotspots in a ray tracing application called Tachyon.  Along the way we demonstrate where to find your pre-installed samples, where to find help, how to use the bottoms up view, how to find hotspots, how to pass arguments to the application when we have Amplifier XE launch the application. Spencer describes the results observed in the Summary tab, explores the Bottoms up view tab and hotspot graph. He then touches on how the call stack information to learn how the function was invoked. He also explores the timeline view to see how the CPU is used over time and whether or not a CPU is being underutilized. Then he drills down into a specific function to look deeper into the exact loops that dominate the execution time. Finally, the video directs a developer to the URL to get a free evaluation copy of the tool.
