FlexLM* and Alternate Interface Names

Symptoms

When you get your system hostid using lmhostid, if you get this result:

lmhostid - Copyright (c) 1989-2011 Flexera Software, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
The FLEXnet host ID of this machine is "000000000000"

or if the license server log contains messages similar to:

17:52:16 (INTEL) Wrong hostid on SERVER line for license file:
17:52:16 (INTEL) SERVER line says ############, hostid is 000000000000
17:52:16 (INTEL) Invalid hostid on SERVER line

you are probably encountering this problem.

Cause

Currently, FlexLM* does not support interface names other than eth0, eth1, ..., ethN. Alternate interface names such as em1 are not recognized and will return an invalid hostid of 000000000000 .

Solution

Updating to the latest version of Intel® Software Licensing (2.1) should resolve the problem.

Workaround

If you would prefer not to upgrade your license manager, you can set your interface names to ethN.  Consult documentation for your system and distribution for the exact process for resetting the interface names.
