Interview: Nanhai Zou, Linux Graphics Engineer

Nanhai Zou is a Senior Software Engineer at the Intel Open Source Technology Center (OTC). He has been involved with Linux on Itanium architecture since 2004. His primary focus on the Linux kernel is system stability and performance. Nanhai Zou has contributed to Kexec/Kdump support for IA-64 Linux. Nanhai Zou is currently working on Intel Linux Graphics, focusing on 3D and Media accelerate technology.

Dawn: What do you like about working in Intel's Open Source Technology Center?

Nanhai: I have been working in Intel’s Open Source Technology Center for more than 5 years on various projects from server to desktop. I was focusing on the Linux kernel, but now I work on Linux graphics. It is interesting work because if you find issues in any open source software you can always go in and fix it.

Dawn: Can you tell us more about your work on Mesa and why it is important to Intel?

Nanhai: I enable GPU accelerated OpenGL features in Mesa. Linux is becoming more and more popular on MIDs and netbooks with Intel processors inside. Traditional plain 2D UI environments cannot satisfy customers. This work is to accelerate important OpenGL features with Intel Graphics cards, thus helping to implement a new generation, good looking 3D UI on those MIDs and netbooks.

Q3: What other Linux graphics projects are you working on?

Nanhai: I am currently working on a Linux GPU accelerated video decoding project. This is a project using graphics cards to decode high definition videos under Linux.

Q4: What do you do for fun when you aren't working at Intel?

Nanhai: I like traveling and cooking. I read a lot in my spare time.
