Intel® Software Innovators Featured at SIGGRAPH 2018

Innovators are Taking Advantage of the Latest Tech to Improve Graphics and Animation Techniques

Intel® Software Innovators are using Intel® technology to take their innovative projects to the next level.  Whether it’s the compute power of Intel® Xeon® processors or utilizing frameworks optimized for Intel® architectures, developers are able to design creative tools for 3D artists and game developers to build amazing computer graphics (CG).  Learn more about some of the Innovator projects that will be demonstrated at SIGGRAPH 2018, a five day event showcasing the latest tech in CG, animation, virtual reality (VR), games, digital art, mixed reality and emerging technologies.

The State of Photogrammetry in Real-Time Graphics

Up-and-coming indie game developer Cristiano Siqueira is pushing the limits of what can be done with real-life graphics for gaming environments.  This first phase of Cristiano’s project stems from his explorations into how the larger indie game developer audience could create natural environments made of real-life scans.  Learn how, in terms of digital art, photogrammetry allows us to “extract” assets from our real-life in his presentation on a natural environment that was made solely from photogrammetry assets.

Procedural Landscaping with Cinema 4D

Marc Potocnik, a 3D artist with expertise in lighting and rendering animations, was tasked with creating a rich Cinema 4D scene that showcases the power of the Intel® Core™ i9 Extreme Edition processor in combination with Intel® Optane™ SSD.  His approach to procedural landscaping within his project, Mountainvista, give him control over every inch of the scene without having to hassle with bitmaps and UV wrapping.

Create Stunning Visuals on a Limited Budget

Computer graphics artist Alice Mo and her team at Edsenses are sharing their knowledge on how they’ve been able to save time and money by creating GPU-like graphics in a limited timeframe using Intel® CPUs.  A more classical approach of rendering multiple passes for compositing allows Edsenses to have more control over the look and feel of the visuals and by using different PCs to render the different layers, they’re able to create a more productive and time-saving result for final visuals within a limited budget.

Using Machine Learning to Create Game Simulations

Using reinforcement learning, Intel® Black Belt Software Developer Abhishek Nandy and his team of Innovators from across India combined their experience to design a model to create game-based simulations.  Their project, SimulatedML, creates machine learning-based simulations on the Unity* Game Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and the resulting executable programs are trained to create models that mimic the realistic and smooth movement of objects in games.

Humanizing the Digital World with 3D Volumetric Animations

Changing the digital landscape by adding realism to everyday virtual interactions is the goal behind Tim and Alex Porter’s latest project, Volumation.  Using a one-click process, their application captures, optimizes and does post-production cleanup to create 3D animated images with increased realism and immersion for digital environments.  This tool fills a void for small to medium sized studios by providing access to volumetric capture with a flexible, affordable and easy-to-use product.

Automatic UV Wrapping Application

By harnessing the compute power of Intel® Xeon® processors, Intel® Software Innovator Eskil Steenberg has created a fully automated tool to map and unwrap 3D objects so that they can be painted or have texture applied.  This is an example of how modern compute power can remove obstacles and make technical problems invisible to creative people. The UV unwrapping algorithm automates the entire process allowing artists to quickly create 3D models for games, VR, augmented reality (AR) and visual effects.
