Intel® Small Business Advantage

You can use this Intel® Small Business Advantage (Intel® SBA) Software Development Kit (SDK) to do any of the following:

  • Integrate and add your own application to Intel® SBA
  • Develop a “management” type of application that gets and displays data about applications running in Intel SBA
  • Develop a “configuration” type of application that will help end users to transfer configuration settings between computers

There are over 60 million small businesses (1-99 employees) worldwide. The vast majority of them do not have either an IT professional on staff or a Managed Service Provider (MSP) to take care of their computing assets.

For the developer, this means a wide-open market that is waiting for business apps. Intel has created the Business Client platform to help developers cater to this market, and has recently announced Intel® Small Business Advantage (Intel® SBA) designed specifically for the unmanaged Business Client. Let's take a look at the platform and learn what kinds of apps are ideal for Intel® SBA.

What is Intel® Small Business Advantage?

Intel® Small Business Advantage is a new computing platform that consists of hardware, software, and firmware for small businesses without a managed network. Intel SBA includes six applications in a user accessible carousel to help small businesses manage basic security and productivity issues.

As a developer, Intel SBA will allow you to easily integrate your app into the carousel using the Intel SBA SDK. Your users will experience your app as an integrated part of their platform and you will know that your app will be effectively installed on their systems taking full advantage of the appropriate Intel Business Client technologies.

Hardware Requirements

The hardware functionality of Intel SBA is provided by the Intel® Management Engine (Intel® ME). The Intel ME is a microprocessor included in Intel chipsets that support Intel SBA. The Intel ME operates independently of the central processing units in the computer system, and has an independent power source. Intel SBA is available in Intel® Core™ i3, Intel® Core™ i5, and Intel® Core™ i7 processors.

Software Requirements

  • Applications must be signed: All applications called by Intel SBA must be signed, otherwise Intel SBA will ignore the application. This means that the applications referenced in the code, and the executable that is created, must be signed.
  • Intel SBA Sample Executable: If the Intel SBA Sample is compiled, the resulting executable must also be signed.
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1: This is the minimum requirement to compile the sample. The sample (and Intel SBA) was created using the Ultimate edition. Although validation was performed only against the Ultimate edition, the sample should also compile correctly on other Visual Studio 2010 editions.
