Power Management: So what is this policy thing?

Unlike a lot of previous recent blogs, this series is about power management in general. At the very end of the series, I’ll write specifically about the Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor.

I have talked incessantly over the years about power states (e.g. P-states and C-states), and how the processor transitions from one state to another. For a list of previous blogs in this series, and well as other related blogs on power and power management, see the article at [List0]. But I have left out an important component of power management, namely the policy.

Writing Energy-Efficient Windows* Store Applications for Mobile Devices [Eng., PDF 753KB]

  • Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor Power Management Pt 0: Introduction and inquiring minds

So exactly which power states exist on the Intel® Xeon Phi™ coprocessor? What happens in each of the power states? Inquiring minds want to know. And since you are, no doubt, aggressively involved in high performance computing (HPC), I am sure you want to know also.

For Ultrabook developers, with great power comes great responsibility

This following article was subsidized by Intel and authored by Zebra Partners.

Often considered to be the Achille's heel of portable devices, power management has come a long way. The new breed of Ultrabook™ PCs have pushed battery life and thermal design to a new level. We spoke with Dr. Mike Pearce, Intel Community Manager for Power Efficiency.

Q: Ultrabooks already have fantastic battery life by design, why do I need to worry about it in my application?
