Using JavaScript* on the command line with node.js

I'm old enough to know from experience that there's nothing new under the sun. I remember when mice and GUI's were the latest way to interact with a computer (though it turned out some folks had been doing that since the 60's). Then it was touch screens (though in truth, I was using them on PLATO in the early 80's). Maybe soon we'll all be wearing visors and waving our hands around in mid air, But for me there's nothing like the command line.

There was a time when the only way to program a computer was by shuffling wires around, but that predates even me. When I started, the way to tell a computer what to do was by typing commands on a keyboard.I'm not just talking about programming, but almost any significant task required typing well-defined commands at a computer prompt, from moving files around to starting programs, to powering down (yes, there was a time when we powered down devices, like all the way).

That's not to say that the command line is primitive. There has been a fair amount of innovation over the years, making the command line both more powerful and easier to use. With features like command completion, history, and easy scripting, I spend a lot of time in the shell. Of course, these days, I'm all about JavaScript, so I'm exceedingly grateful for node.js.

Originally designed for server-side scripting, node.js works just as well for anything you might want to do in the shell.The really cool thing, though, is the ecosystem that has sprung up around it, enabled by npm (Node Packaged Modules) a plethora of modules that are easily included in whatever program you're writing. From grunt, to express, to coffee-script, there are hundreds of tools that can be installed easily with npm.

The most important thing to understand when you start programming node.js is its asynchronous model. Things aren't exactly done in parallel, but different tasks may be done in no particular order. This is actually much like the way JavaScript works in the browsers, with bits of code responding to events with no guarantees about which comes fir st. As in the browser, a lot of things get done in callbacks of one sort or another.

While it's convenient that the programming model resembles the browser, the main reason it was designed that way was for performance reasons. You don't want to be waiting, for example, on a file read or network operation. Thus if you want to read a file named foo using the builtin fs module in node.js, you call readFile providing the filename, some options and a callback function to be invoked when the data is ready:

The net effect is an interesting mix of what you're used to in the browser and things that you'd never find in that environment. For example, setTimeout and setInterval are there, but now you can combine them with os.loadavg to get a regular update on your system load:

var id  = setInterval(function() {console.log(os.loadavg()[0]);}, 2000);

Given expertise with JavaScript, the capabilities of node.js and the huge number of libraries already available via npm, there's almost no limit to what you can do on the command line with JavaScript. In fact, I bet it would be really easy to create grep.js....
