Intel® Black Belt Software Developers, Intel® Software Innovators, & Intel® Student Ambassadors: February 2018

Intel® Developers and Innovators were busy over the last month! Here’s an update on what the Intel® Software Innovators, Intel® Black Belt Software Developers, and Intel® Student Ambassadors were up to around the globe.


Marco Dal Pino hosted a session at AI Saturday Pordenone about how to develop applications that can use gestures and postures using an AI based SDK such as Microsoft’s*Project Prague. Massimo Bonnani spoke also about Project Prague at Meet{cast} meetup in Rome and how it allows you to define gestures declaratively by setting constraints in a simple language and allowing, thanks to the features offered by Intel® RealSense™ cameras, to create a more natural user experience. Abhishek Nandy trained 3,650 developers at 7 Intel Alliance workshops on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and Internet of Things (IoT) across India. Suresh Kumar Gunasekaran gave an AI learning workshop in Chennai. Thomas Endres & Martin Foertsch talked about their Avatar telepresence system which uses the Nao robot, Oculus Rift, RealSense, and Intel IoT Gateway, and Genuino 101 technology at Nerd Nite Munchen.


Asia Pacific

Aviraup Basu hosted a workshop with the robotics session teaching students about how to use the Atmel developer boards to create their own obstacle avoider bots and the IoT session dedicated to using an Espressif* (ESP) device, Amazon* Web Services (AWS), and Google* Cloud Service as part of a demo of Intel’s alliance partners.

Omkar Khair gave a session on the fundamentals of AI, ML, and Deep Learning (DL) including everything from core concepts to tools that can be used to tinker around with the data at both the Pune AI Meetup and the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) – AI Workshop.

Manisha Biswas gave a session on IoT with AWS at the Intel® Alliance Conference in Kolkata and also displayed her demo in their techfest as well as speaking at an AI Workshop at Institute of Engineering and Management (IEM) on AI which mentored students with their Innovate Project Demos.

Pablo Farias Navarro had 202 new enrollments in his 2-hour Intro to Virtual Reality (VR) Game Development course and had 30 new enrollments to his 40-hour Virtual Reality Mini-Degree program that covers the development of 15 VR games with Unity* for both mobile and desktop VR platforms. Pablo also shared his latest game, Killing Zombies with Friends VR which he’s about to publish for early access on Steam.

Siddhant Agarwal shares two project, Image Analysis using Google's* Cloud Vision API and Personal AI Assistant Apps/Skills as well as doing two Intel® IoT Alliance Workshops which gave an overview of Intel technology as well as how it integrates with Amazon Web Services. Rishabh Banga hosted the mentor meetups and introduced the mentors for employees specializing in business and technology with team members for Ericsson Innovation Awards 2018. Rishabh also gave a speakership on getting started with IoT and cloud services providing an overview of how Intel IoT Technology integrates with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. 


Chris Matthieu gave the State of IoT keynote speech at IoT DevFest Phoenix. Shivaram Mysore presented an investor pitch for the work he’s been pursuing at the Out-of-the-Box Network Developers meetup in Santa Clara. Suyash Joshi delivered a talk on the state of mobile Augmented Reality (AR) including key insights and best practices for Google’s* ARCore for Android and Apple’s* ARKit for iOS at AR in Action in Boston.

Alex Porter recapped two events: January’s Video Game Maker’s Unite Meetup on Audience and VR Austin Jam 2017. The theme of the Video Game Maker’s meetup was understanding audiences and their interests and Tim Porter spoke to the group about the Intel® Software Innovator program which supports independent developers and encourages their forward thinking innovations.

Peter Ma participated in the FC Bayern Hackathon where his team built a dating app that used AI to match your perfect date based on how much they look like your favorite player and then moved on to a blockchain solution which brought them to 2nd place overall in the competition. Results were covered at SAP News. At the WCEF Hackathon Peter and his team built a blockchain solution with WELL* coin for electronic medical records (EMR) which won the Well coin sponsor prize which was $1,000 worth of WELL coin pre-ICO. They also won 2nd place building an Uber* Language model that allows AI to respond in all languages at AI Hack DT. Doctor Hazel was also covered at Intel IQ.

Macy Kuang gave a training at Phoenix IoT DevFest on how to create cardboard bots with Servo* motors, explaining how this knowledge can be transferred to build larger machines. They began with learning how to build a circuit, then lighting up an LED, then uploading software to Arduino to control the servo motors, and finally controlling the bots via Wi-Fi.

Paul Langdon shares a pre-release look at AWS* DeepLens built with Intel’s® Deep Learning Deployment Toolkit, as well as his Edge Computer Vision on Intel NUC project which walks you through designing your own version of the DeepLens using Intel® NUC hardware. Paul also conducted Intel Alliance Workshops on AWS* Vision Workshop on Intel NUC and Google* Cloud.

At Machine Learning Days 2018 in Lausanne, Switzerland Daniel Whitenack taught a session on machine learning with Go, including exposing participants to integrations including the Intel® Deep Learning SDK. He also taught another session on deploying a distributed ML pipeline in the cloud with Intel® Nervana™ technology with Neon™ framework, Docker*, Pachyderm*, and Kubernetes* with a focus on enabling reproducibility in this type of workflow.

Paulo Pinheiro published his paper on Wheelie for the 2017 26th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN).


Marco Minerva introduced Microsoft’s* Custom Vision Service at AI Saturday Pordenone and demonstrated how to create a model that can be used either online or offline in a Xamarin.Forms* app in order to provide text and audio information about the subject that is recognized. At the FabLab Imperia Workshop Marco explained how IoT fits in the Microsoft ecosystem and demonstrated, with several examples, how to start working with Microsoft’s* Windows* 10 IoT Core using the Universal Windows Platform. Paolo Moro is working on evolving the Vitruvian game project as the municipality of Padua is providing them a location to assemble the game as well as organize meetings for students and companies and their plan is to improve the graphics of the VR scenery and the automation of the prototype in time for the next technology faire.

Tejumade Afonja continued her 16 week series of AI Saturday Lagos hands-on labs teaching on the fundamentals of neural networks and deep learning practical applications. Eyal Gruss gave a shallow introduction to deep learning to Arab software engineering students, organized by ITWorks foundation for advancement of Arab students. He also, gave a talk on swarm intelligence and emergent behavior to Israel Tech Challenge (ITC) students. Ron Evans shares the latest release of GoCV which adds support for Tensorflow*, Caffe*, and Intel’s® Computer Vision SDK’s Photography Vision Library (PVL) face recognizer. This latest release was featured in Golang Weekly, the largest email newsletter for the Go programming community.


Kshitiz Rimal shared some of the lessons he’s learned while working on an image classifier project which helps visually impaired individuals living in Nepal to recognize monetary notes for their day-to-day monetary activities.  Kshitiz also hosted two AI/Deep learning Prerequisite workshops which is part of an on-going nation-wide workshop series on AI and Deep Learning in Nepal. Kshitiz also gave a session on how to get started with AI and Deep Learning and how Intel can help at IT Meet 2018 in Nepal.

Shadab Khan shares his project which involves text to image generation using an experimental TensorFlow of synthesizing images using the GAN-CLS algorithm. Shaury Baranwal shares his project which analyzes the sentiment of customer reviews for a restaurant using natural language processing. Srivatsa Sinha wrote an article on optimization techniques in the Intel® AI DevCloud. Sumedh Pendurkar shared his Person Re-Identification project using deep learning methods he implemented based on a NIPS paper on inexact matching. Ujjwal Upadhyay shares his fall detection project which detects if a person has fallen on the ground and if they don’t standup in time the nearest hospital is notified of the incident.

Anirban Santara spoke about Imitation Learning, AI Safety, and the work he did last year that made it to the Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) Symposium at NIPS 2017 at the Intel® AI Workshop at Kshitij 2018; you can watch the video or view the slides. Prajjwal Bhargava taught an Intel® Computer Vision SDK webinar. Avinash Madasu shared his approaches to Hackathon Predict Happiness on HackerEarth. Divyansh Jha hosted a hands-on lab for the AI Saturdays Delhi study group. Saurabh Ghatnekar supported the AI Deep Learning Seminar at MIT COE on the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and applications including an introduction and demo of deep learning.

Alok Pandey is hosting an 8-week training program on Statistical Machine Learning using R* Programming and Python* for undergraduates at the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Dehradun. The first week was an introductory session on the basic idea of machine learning and technologies, and syntaxes of R and Python. In the second week the concept of building a predictive model was introduced along with the concept of multi-collinearity.

Soubhik Das organized an Artificial Intelligence Workshop at ThoughtWorks, one of the biggest places for tech events in Pune. Sri Harsha Gajavalli gave a hands-on machine learning training at IIIT SriCity and was the key speaker at a machine learning meetup in Chennai where he gave a brief intro of different algorithms and then dived into supervised learning, and then demonstrating the different algorithms on Google Cloud and Intel® Parallel Studio. Suryaveer Singh organized the ML and AI workshop at IIT Indore where Abhishek Nandy spoke.

Vlada Rau hosted the AI in Video Game session at the Instituto de Empresa AI Club Meetup in Madrid where they discussed the latest trends of the application of AI technologies in the gaming industry. Carlos Paradis share his project idea for identifying children abuse through drawings. Edwin Williams shared his ION Conference paper on Using AI to find patterns in vehicle paths and his project on the design of transfer reinforcement learning mechanisms for autonomous collision avoidance. Christian Gabor went through Intel deep learning tutorials in a group in Jupyter* Notebook and also worked on image recognition projects at the Oregon State University (OSU) ML/AI Club meeting.Ryan Tanaka shares his project, WRENCH, which is designed to enable developers to simulate their scientific workflows accurately.

Antoine Sauray introduced the principles of reinforcement learning and applying deep learning to solve an OpenAI* Lunar Lander problem at a competitive, hands-on workshop at his university. Moloti Tebogo shares his project which is a new approach to home security using DJI’s Spark mini drones which is embedded with Intel® Movidius™ technology and the African motion content neural network to help identify thieves. Daniel Theisges dos Santos shares his project on using neural networks to recognize handwritten text. Emanuel Di Nardo gave a workshop on how to implement and use a deep belief network (DBN) using TensorFlow. Hanz Cuevas Velasquez taught a session introducing image processing tools at the advanced vision lab at the University of Edinburgh.
