Perceptual Computing Hacknights: Highlights from Munich and San Francisco

June 2013 was a good month for perceptual computing, as multiple workshops and hacknights were held in both San Francisco and Munich.


There was one free perceptual computing workshop planned in Munich in June, created with the intent to help developers become familiar with the Perceptual Computing SDK and the Creative*Gesture Camera Kit:

Interview with San Francisco Intel Perceptual Computing Hackathon Winner Cyrus Lum

There were a lot of standout developers at the recent San Francisco Perceptual Computing Hackathon, one of which was Cyrus Lum, a veteran in the industry with 25 years of experience in game production, development and management roles with both publishing and independent development companies. Cyrus won with the overall Hackathon Grand Prize of $3000 with his “MyPetShadow”; a fun pet game which integrates both voice recognition and hand gestures. Here’s a video of MyPetShadow in motion:

    One of the challenges in computer vision applications is segmentation-the separation of desired objects from their surroundings. Early techniques separated objects by color or contrast. With the introduction of time of flight infrared cameras, it became possible to segment objects by their distance from the camera.
