Integrate VTune Amplifier into Visual Studio During Installation

VTune Amplifier integrates into Visual Studio by default. You specify the version of Visual Studio used for integration in the IDE Integration portion of the installation wizard. If you have several versions of Visual Studio and want to instruct the installation wizard to use a specific version for integration, click the Customize link and specify the required version on the Choose Integration Target page. You can only integrate one version of VTune Amplifier into Visual Studio IDE.

Integrate VTune Amplifier into Visual Studio After Installation

If you have already installed VTune Amplifier and need to integrate it into Visual Studio IDE,

  1. Open the installation wizard from Control Panel > Programs and Features > Intel VTune Amplifier version > Uninstall/Change.
  2. Select the Modify option.
  3. On the Select Components to Modify wizard page, select Graphical user interface.
  4. Click Next.

On the Choose Integration Target page, specify the version of Visual Studio for integration by clicking Customize.

Open VTune Amplifier in Visual Studio IDE

Once you have integrated VTune Amplifier in Visual Studio, open the IDE. The toolbar displays icons to start VTune Amplifier and profile with it.

You can also access VTune Amplifier from the Tools menu in the IDE.

Load a project in the Solution Explorer window. Once you have compiled it, you can profile with VTune Amplifier. When you click the Open VTune Amplifier icon () from the toolbar, the application opens to the Welcome Page.

Use VTune Amplifier in Visual Studio IDE

The integrated view provides a seamless experience with VTune Amplifier within the Visual Studio IDE. The user interface in the integrated environment mirrors the standalone application.

Use the VTune Amplifier toolbar to configure and control result collection.

VTune Amplifier results *.amplxe show up in the Intel VTune Amplifier Results folder. To display the folder, in the Visual Studio IDE, select View > Other Windows > Intel VTune Amplifier Results. To delete all results from a project, right click the project folder containing results and select Clear.

Click the down arrow to select a viewpoint, a preset configuration of windows/panes for an analysis result. For most of analysis types, you can switch among several viewpoints to focus on particular performance metrics.

Click buttons on navigation toolbars to change window views and toggle window panes on and off.

In the Timeline pane, analyze thread activity and transitions or analyze the distribution of application performance per hardware metric over time for event-based sampling analysis results (for example, Microarchitecture Exploration).

Configure VTune Amplifier for Visual Studio

To configure VTune Amplifier options in the Visual Studio IDE, click the pulldown menu next to the Open VTune Amplifier icon () and select Options:

  • Use the General pane to configure general collection options such as application output destination, management of the collected raw data, and so on.

  • Use the Result Location pane to specify the result name template that defines the name of the result file and its directory.

  • Use the Source/Assembly pane to manage the source file cache and specify syntax for the disassembled code.

From the standalone interface, you can access the VTune Amplifier options via the File > Options... menu.
