Looking back and forward...

While Intel ® celebrates the 1000th University Milestone worldwide, we’re proud to count among them 268 of the best universities in the Europe-Middle-East and Africa region across 44 countries.

Congratulations to Dr. Mazen Kharbutli for being our 1000th member and winning the upcoming book, The Art of Concurrency, A Thread Monkey's Guide to Writing Parallel Applications, by Dr. Clay Breshears as well as a laptop computer! Dr Kharbutli said “Our Faculty of Computer and Information Technology here at Jordan University of Science and Technology is delighted to be recognized for joining the Intel Academic Community program. As a leading university in the region, we feel it is important to continuously give our students cutting edge development curriculum to prepare them for the future. We plan to utilize software development tools from Intel in our curriculum. We also believe that it is important for our professors to learn from industry experts which will make our parallel programming and visual computing curriculum best in class.”  Watch the video and find out more about this milestone here.

It has been a very exciting year for me as many interesting projects were initiated in the region:

In an education and technology expansion campaign throughout the Middle-East advocated by Craig Barrett, 1,000 engineers will be trained on multi-core computer development at regional labs. Ahmed Wagueeh was welcomed on board in this effort to reach Middle-Eastern universities and next-generation engineers in this promising region! The first training will take place in Cairo in March…

Early this year the first ACM-Intel Joint HPC workshop was taught in Ankara with participants from Dokuz Eylul University, METU University, Middle-East Technical University, Bilkent, Hacettepe, Cankaya & Ankara Universities as well as the Izmir Institute of Technology.

The Russian Sub-page was launched with Intel courseware translated into Russian and 7 Professor curricula shared with the community, for more on this go here

Through Intel’s collaboration with the Software Engineering for parallel Systems SEPAS Working Group, a proposal for the Second International Workshop on Multi-core Software Engineering (IWMSE2009) has been accepted. The workshop will take place on May 18, 2009, co-located with the 31st International Conference on Software Engineering, May 16-24, 2009 in Vancouver, Canada. Here's a quote from Dr. Victor Pankratius, Head of Young Investigator Group on Multicore Software Engineering, University of Karlsruhe, Germany on his work with us:"In our challenge to make multicore software engineering more accessible to average programmers, Intel's hands-on teaching material is of great help."

Recently, Intel announced the formation of Intel Labs Europe (ILE) to drive even closer collaboration with European researchers and policy makers on EU initiatives. ILE is exploring new research programs with institutions including University of Saarland in Germany. So if you have a good project idea around visual computing, software development, enterprise solution, green computing, advanced microprocessor research and high performance computing, be sure to send it along!

Finally, last month we launched the new version of our Multi-Core Programming Instructor Lead Training & Threading Games for Performance content at Stuttgart University for the first time world wide to several of the leading German universities and Institutes and got some very positive feedback on our new Gaming modules! Students seem to love to learn in this concrete framework and enjoy the programming when they can see its direct and tangible result so if you would like to get ramped-up on this leading-edge technology and prepare your students for the new world of computing, be sure to contact me!

If you’re interested in graphics education, make sure you join the Eurographics 2009 on the 30th of March where Matt Pharr will speak on “Software Rendering Redux: Back to the Future with New Graphics Architectures” and visit our booth where we will have ray tracing, the smoke and a parallel studio demos! Hope to meet you there!
