Intel® Developer Zone SDN/NFV Dev Lab

The June Intel Developer Zone SDN/NFV Dev Lab reached 60 developers from 33 different companies. This one-day lab featured two parallel tracks from Intel, Ericsson, and Juniper on DPDK cache coherency, microservices-based VNF design, libeventdev, Intel® Resource Director Technology (Intel® RDT), OpenDaylight*, OpenContrail*, Intel® Clear Containers and Intel® Ethernet strategy and roadmap.

Track 1 featured DPDK. Muthurajan Jayakumar (aka M Jay) taught us that all processor accesses are not created equally in his session, Cache Consistency – Requirements and its Packet Processing Performance Implications. Developers also had the opportunity to build a DPDK-in-a-Box kit in the DPDK hands-on lab. Jerome Tollet and Ed Warnicke, distinguished engineers from Cisco, shared their insights on VPP in VPP, the Universal Dataplane, and Manohar Castelino, Intel Principal Engineer, demonstrated the use of VPP with DPDK and SRIO-v based networks to connect Intel Clear Containers in Using VPP and SRIO-V with Clear Containers.

Track 2 focused on OpenDaylight and Intel RDT.  Intel software engineers Priya Autee, Sunil Raghavan, and Khun Ban led the Intel RDT sessions.  Priya hosted an Intel RDT hands-on lab where developers were challenged to achieve deterministic behavior and quality of service when confronting a multitude of workloads. The lab demonstrated how performance can be improved with Intel RDT. Sunil and Khun explained how Intel RDT can help to detect and mitigate a noisy-neighbor situation in their session, Quieting Noisy Neighbor with Intel® Resource Director Technology.

Prem Sankar, from the Ericsson Open Source Ecosystem* team, provided an Overview of OpenDaylight Container Orchestration Engine Project. Pramod Raghavendra Jayathirth, of Intel, walked us through Deploying OpenDaylight and OpenStack at Ease.

Other sessions included:

We had several ideas presented during Idea Roulette and five developers won a DPDK-in-a-Box kit. The lucky winners were Anil Jangam, Cisco; Tapomay Dey, Cisco; Senthil Ganesan, Dell; Prem Sankar, Ericsson; Joseph Anderson, Stanford Medical/AWS.

A special thanks goes out to Soheil Firouzabadi and Richard Dahringer for making the hands-on labs possible. Without their help, we would not have been able to connect to the labs at Intel facilities for the hands-on sessions.

Santa Clara July Meetup

We look forward to the July meetup when we’ll be celebrating the seventh birthday of OpenStack*. The Out of the Box Network Developers and the Bay Area OpenStack meetup group will be co-hosting this event. There will be hands on sessions and demos by experts on Kubertnetes* and OpenStack*, Network Services Benchmark (NSB), and Containers and Software Dataplane: DPDK and FD.io/VPP at this all-day event. John Studarus will lead developers in some OpenStack IoT Wizardry in a hands-on session. Speakers from the Linux* Foundation will tell us about the OPNFV Plugfest/ETSI Plug Test and its benefit to NFV developers. During the evening reception, special guest speaker Uri Elzur, CTO of Intel’s Data Center Network Solution Group, will share his expertise in cloud networking. Check online for the most current information about the July meetup.

Out of the Box Network Developers Portland Meetup

Out of the Box Network Developers in Portland hosted their second meetup on May 30.  Experts from OpenStack and Intel provided insight into Neutron*, Azure Stack* and ONOS*. The evening began with Jim Chamings, OpenStack expert, explaining Neutron and how it works in OpenStack. Next up was Chris Martin from Intel. Chris helps customers with adoption to software-defined infrastructure, cloud technologies, specifically in the areas of hybrid cloud, software-defined infrastructure, and security. Chris talked about the value of Azure Stack and how it is positioned with hybrid cloud for enterprise customers. Closing out the evening was an ONOS live setup. Balta Ruiz, Intel and Out of the Box Network Developers Portland host, used a few VMs and demonstrated a live setup of ONOS.
